So winter has arrived and you just don't know what to do with yourself...

The mountains of fallen snow have us realise that this is the time of year to think of doing something other than shovelling the fluffy stuff considering a life which is starting to look more than slushy and not just because of the perpetuating ritual of having to start all over again with that shovel but also because of the fact that running around in circles in the fluff and the slush just makes you want to run away from it all ultimate;y having you end up somewhere beyond that refrigerating feeling which implies that flying south like the geese in search of that distant beach is seen as the only means of salvation . But then I guess that everyone is aware of this. Although despite all the fun there is being out in the sun in some faraway tourist trap just to get away from it all , still bear to mind that if you are bored of urban slush and the snowballs from the neighbours kids but just can't convince yourself that taking some time off on the slopes is the solution in fear of that existential downhill which may somehow follow taking a plunge into the rocky unknown, just don't think of running away to somewhere beyond the reach of all that fluff ! After all you can for a change just take a chance with a snowmobile to discover winter like you rarely had the chance to !

Imagine what it is like just trying to come to grips with the endless mileage of trails that lead to just about everywhere (at least in Quebec) while feeling free from urban pollution (or the busy roadway syndrome leading towards the very urban wilderness ! ) taking the machine to the ends of the earth . I for one briefly experimented with the concept and came out feeling like a new age Daniel Boone discovering the outback with this all metal beast hoping to make it on time to the next heated sanctuairy out in the middle of nowhere where all the trendy folks unite ! O.K. I'm pulling your leg since I don't own a snowmobile nor do I expect to take a ride on one shortly ( I only had a glimpse of what the fuss was all about but I sure did catch on ! ). But the reality still remains that snowmobiling because of its extreme popularity must be one of the most exciting activities to undertake with a group of friends in search of the exhilaration there must be plowing the countryside and discovering the outback in search of sheer fun out in the cold ! How else is it possible to explain the collective madness of the likes there is to observe when hoards of people take to their saddles and their space suits at 40 below to travel to places which I thought were at the ends of the earth like Chibougamau ?

Despite the sceptism regarding not only safety but also the availability of essential services catering to snowmobilers , it is astonishing to note that in many places snowmobilers can not only count on a well groomed and patrolled network of trails spanning literally thousands of miles but also un unparalleled level of servicing if ever something does go out of hand once trying to get there ( So you'll never be left in the dark with a steel horse that died on you ) . Furthermore, apart from the unconspicuous rest stops in the middle of nowhere where people converge, there are the more formal places in the middle of nowhere to have a beer , a meal and even a stopover for the night since (in Quebec at least ) several outfitters and inn keepers (the Faillon lake inn comes to mind) in proximity to the trails despite being way off the beaten track of civilisation offer winter accomodations and derive much of their business from snowmobilers. Thus have no fear of being stranded if you take the choice to make a stopover virtually nowhere, the point being that such places most often have the most amazing level of accomodations and services without mention of the very unique atmosphere rememencent of what there is to expect once really being off the beaten track...

Anyone needing to take a ride on the wild side should take to their saddles to undertake the most fascinating of journeys that only a snowmobile can make possible such a beast going where no car would tread (or for that matter no urbanised primate crippled by his automobile has dared set his wheels ) thus making it possible to get a closer glimpse at some of the more amazing scenery using trails which often give some unique perspectives occasionally literally climbing mountains (such as is the case for the trail going up mount "Sir Wilfrid" north of the town of Mont Laurier and attaining an inn on the summit whose purpose is to serve snowmobilers...) . For those in the mood for a change of pace from being sardines in a can trying to tame the roads with their clunkers , it is clear that the only way of truely discovering the last frontier beyond urban monotony is by taking to your saddles and plowing the trail with your group of friends with the goal of attaining that warm and cozy place so far away to enjoy the fluff and the weather and all the other sweet things of life !
